As most Hastings High School students are aware, on September 9th, the s\ chool had an assembly to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks \ that left 2,977 innocent people dead. The assembly was very emotional, with per\ formances by the chorus and various staff members and students sharing their \ personal memories of the events of that day. This ceremony, although beautiful \ and powerful, was also a wasted opportunity.

Now, ten years after the attacks, it is time to learn about them. At this point, despite having lived through them ourselves with almost all of us being affected personally in some way, the attacks are now history. However, we spend very little class time learning about them, outside of Mr. Ralston’s Middle E\ astern History class. The assembly was a good opportunity to educate students, some of whom were not even in school at the time, about the events of that day\, what led up to them and what followed them. Instead the school gave an emotionally satisfying ceremony that provided littl\ e in the way of context for what happened. Instead of the assembly that took p\ lace, teachers could have spent time going through what happened that day. Students could have taken a look at the complicated web of events that led up to t\ he attack. Students could have discussed the actions taken after the attacks from the Invasion of Afghanistan to water boarding and other torturous devices at Guantanamo Bay. What the school did instead was give an assembly heavy in sentimentality and light on facts.

The Friday before the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks Hastings High School held a somber assembly reflecting on student s' and teachers' personal experiences from that day. Looking back ten years later, adults can remember what the world was like before the attacks. As teenagers, we were small children at the time and can only gauge the gravity and emotion associated with the events of that day based on our most basic memories. This assembly gave us all perspectives from 9/11, from both adults and children. It reminded us that ten years later the vulnerability that those attacks created in the minds of all Americans remains visceral. We live in the wo\ rld that 9/11 created, but we are not yet ready to view it through the lens of history. We are scholars in school, but this anniversary brough out our most human qualities. It was appropriate for the administration to put together such a sensitive presentation. In the future we will see the events of that day receeding farther into his tory, condensed into textbook assignments, but for now we must remember the pain of that day and the support we gave to each other when the time came.
